Peanuts, or peanut butter, as part of a moderate fat diet produced a 14 percent drop in LDL cholesterol and a 13 percent drop in triglyceride levels in persons with normal blood cholesterol levels after one month. In another study, 1-2 ozs of peanuts a day for 6 months lowered the LDL cholesterol levels of postmenopausal women by 12 percent.

Enough is Enough

Some things are essential for life. Pure air, water, sunlight, food, physical activity, etc. Health problems result when these things are in short supply. Problems can also result when we get too much. Moderation is a very important quality for a balanced Christian life.

Exposure to sunlight is necessary for vitamin D production. Excessive unprotected exposure to the sun can produce skin cancer. A little stress is necessary to get things done efficiently and enable us to meet deadlines. Too much stress can generate a multitude of physical and mental problems. Insufficient food causes malnutrition while excessive calories leads to overweight and a myriad of associated health problems. Taking large amounts of vitamin supplements is often associated with the same symptoms seen with vitamin deficiency. Exercise is essential to living a healthy lifestyle, yet excessive exercise can lead to exhaustion, tissue breakdown and a decreased immune function. For optimal health and efficient functioning the body needs regular periods of work and rest. Too much work or too little rest fatigues the system and interrupts natural cycles.

Temperance in all things is necessary to health and the development of a good Christian character.
