The risk of type 2 diabetes in older women was found to be 22 to 23 percent lower for those consuming a high intake of dietary fiber and whole grains compared with those having a low intake.

- Researchers from the University of Bari in Italy found that senior citizens who consumed high amounts of monounsaturated fats (as found in olives, olive oil and nuts) had a lower risk of memory loss than those who consumed lesser amounts of monounsaturated fat.
